Enterprise AI Analysis: Immersion in Virtual Cultural Heritage: Framework, Research Landscape, Future Directions, and Ongoing Study

SHORT-PAPER

Immersion in Virtual Cultural Heritage: Framework, Research Landscape, Future Directions, and Ongoing Study

This study proposes that a nuanced understanding of immersion's distinct dimensions and their mediating role between technical design features and cultural learning outcomes is critical for advancing Virtual Cultural Heritage (VCH) research and practice. A tripartite framework of spatial, emotional, and social immersion in virtual environments is articulated. A literature review was conducted based on this framework. The review reveals multiple research gaps and opportunities, including absence of immersion, predominant focus on spatial immersion, lagged AI integration, lack of accessibility and inclusive designs, and limited measurement methods. We offer recommendations for future scholarship and present a case study centered on classical literature education in Singapore's multicultural context, demonstrating how VCH research can address the identified deficiencies.

Tripartite Immersion Framework

The study articulates a tripartite framework distinguishing spatial immersion, emotional immersion, and social immersion. It emphasizes that a nuanced understanding of these distinct dimensions and their mediating role between technical design features and cultural learning outcomes is critical for advancing VCH research and practice. The framework guides the design of purpose-driven immersive experiences.

Spatial Immersion Focus

90 of VCH studies prioritize Spatial Immersion

Research Gaps Identified

The literature review identifies critical gaps: 1) absence of explicit immersion as a design framework, 2) predominant focus on spatial immersion, 3) lagged AI/GenAI adoption, 4) insufficient attention to accessibility and inclusivity, and 5) constrained evaluation methods failing to measure long-term effectiveness. These gaps highlight the need for more holistic and human-centered approaches in VCH design.

Future Directions for VCH

Enterprise Process Flow

Systematic Integration of Immersion (Spatial, Emotional, Social)
Generative AI for Dynamic & Adaptive Environments
Inclusive & Personalized User Studies (Longitudinal)
Interdisciplinary Dialogue (Cognitive Psych, Education, HCI)

Current VCH Applications vs. Proposed Framework

Feature Current VCH Applications Proposed Framework Approach
Immersion Focus Predominantly Spatial (90% of studies) Holistic (Spatial, Emotional, Social)
AI Integration Limited to 3D model generation GenAI for personalized, real-time interaction & avatars
User Study Scope Short-term, post-test assessments Longitudinal, diverse demographics, accessibility
Outcome Measure Usability, satisfaction, motivation Cultural learning, empathy, identity, long-term retention

Ongoing Case Study

Classical Literature Education in Singapore

An ongoing study develops VR-based educational prototypes for teaching classical literature across Singapore's three primary ethnic communities. It addresses the identified research gaps by integrating multiple immersion dimensions (spatial, emotional, social) and advanced technologies (VR environments, dynamic scene transformations, GenAI-empowered avatars) to create a synergetic immersive experience.

  • Virtual Reality: Facilitates situated learning by simulating inaccessible environments and evoking emotions.
  • Dynamic Environmental Recreation: Recreates scenes with transformations synchronized to narrative, deepening spatial and emotional immersion.
  • GenAI-empowered avatar: LLM-powered avatars enable personalized, real-time interaction, intensifying 'co-presence with historical figures' and strengthening emotional stimulation.
