Enlivening the Past: Evoking Human Presence with ‘Living Traces' in Virtual Reconstructions

Shengdan Cai, Hong Kong Shue Yan University Eugene Ch'ng, BNBU Centre for Computational Culture and Heritage | NVIDIA DLI Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University Jieyi Xie, Hong Kong Shue Yan University

This paper proposes and empirically evaluates a 'living traces' approach, adapted from museum curatorial practice, as a resource-efficient alternative that uses deliberately staged environmental cues to imply, rather than simulate, human presence. Based on this approach, we developed a VR experience depicting a domestic home in Ningbo, China, during the late 20th century. We conducted a mixed-methods study with 50 participants. Data was collected via behavioural observations and questionnaires; the latter combined Likert-scale items measuring experiential quali- ties with open-ended questions capturing subjective accounts. The 'living traces' approach proved effective, with 98% of participants reporting a sensation of living traces in the virtual environment. This sensation correlated with VR-specific affordances, particularly the feeling of being surrounded by the virtual world and the ability to impose changes on it. The 'living traces' approach offers a viable framework for imbuing virtual heritage with an affective sense of life, shifting the design focus from technically simulating it to evoking it by triggering the user's own memory and imagination, thereby creating deeply personal and meaningful connections to the past.

Overview of Living Traces VR
Methodology & Design
Impact & Future Implications

The 'living traces' approach addresses the challenge of creating engaging virtual cultural heritage experiences that feel alive, without the resource-intensive and often unconvincing direct simulation of human characters. Inspired by museum curatorial practices, it uses subtle environmental cues to imply human presence, triggering user imagination and personal connection.

0 of participants reported sensing 'living traces,' validating the core premise of evoking human presence through subtle environmental cues. This high engagement demonstrates a powerful new approach for cultural heritage interpretation in VR.

VR Experience: Domestic Home in Ningbo, China

This study developed a VR experience recreating a late 20th-century domestic living space in Ningbo, China. Rather than replicating a specific physical site, the project aimed to construct a generic yet representative environment encapsulating shared domestic experiences of that era. 'Living traces' were implemented through carefully arranged material cues (e.g., askew chairs, half-cut sweet potato) and dynamic elements (e.g., flickering fire, rising steam) to imply recent human activity. This created a sense of ongoing life, prompting users to infer the narrative of absent inhabitants and fostering a deeper, more personal connection to the past.

The research employed a mixed-methods study with 50 participants, contrasting conditions with and without explicit 'memory notes'. Data was collected via questionnaires, behavioral observations, and video recordings, then analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation and thematic analysis to understand the impact of 'living traces' and VR affordances on user experience.

Mixed-Methods Data Analysis
Evaluate Effectiveness & User Connection
0 A strong correlation (rs=0.50, p<0.001) between sensing 'living traces' and the feeling of being "surrounded by the virtual world" (SP1) highlights the critical role of immersive VR affordances in facilitating this experience.

The 'living traces' approach demonstrates a powerful shift from technical simulation to artful evocation, enabling deeply personal and affective connections to the past. This opens new avenues for cultural heritage institutions to create engaging, resource-efficient, and emotionally resonant VR experiences.

Feature Environmental Immersion (Living Traces) Textual Cues (Memory Notes)
Primary Driver of Sensation
  • Foundational for sensing 'living traces'.
  • Atmospheric and object-based storytelling.
  • VR's immersive, spatial, and interactive qualities.
  • No statistically significant difference in sensing 'living traces'.
  • Functions more as an attention director than meaning creator.
  • Users sometimes reluctant to read.
User Engagement
  • Naturally prompts imagination and personal connection.
  • "Surrounded by the virtual world" (SP1) strongly correlated.
  • Provides immediate attentional anchors.
  • Engagement driven more by ludic appeal of VR.
0 Participants connected with absent inhabitants primarily through two key processes: Personal Nostalgia and Empathic Projection, making the experience deeply personal and meaningful.
