DGConformer: Dynamic Graph Convolutional Network Combined with Conformer for EEG Emotion Recognition
This paper introduces DGConformer, a novel hybrid model for EEG-based emotion recognition. It combines a Dynamic Graph Convolutional Network (DGCNN) for adaptive spatial feature extraction and a Conformer module for robust temporal modeling. The DGCNN adaptively constructs functional brain connectivity graphs using k-nearest neighbor relationships, capturing dynamic interactions between brain regions. The Conformer integrates self-attention and convolution to model both long-range and local temporal dependencies. Evaluated on the SEED-IV dataset, DGConformer achieves 92.36% accuracy for four-class emotion recognition, outperforming several state-of-the-art models. Ablation studies confirm the effectiveness of both dynamic graph construction and the hybrid temporal module, providing a novel solution for affective computing.

Spatial Feature Extraction
The model represents EEG signals as graphs, where nodes are EEG channels and edges are functional connections. Unlike traditional fixed-graph methods, DGConformer dynamically constructs these graphs for each sample. It achieves this by identifying k-nearest neighbors in the feature space, allowing the model to learn emotional task-relevant functional connectivity. This dynamic approach ensures that evolving interactions between brain regions specific to different emotions are captured, rather than being limited by static physical proximity.
Temporal Modeling with Conformer
EEG signals exhibit significant long-range and local temporal dependencies crucial for emotion recognition. The Conformer-based architecture combines self-attention mechanisms, which excel at capturing global long-range dependencies, with convolutional modules, adept at extracting fine-grained local patterns. This hybrid approach is exceptionally well-suited for modeling the complex temporal dynamics of EEG, encompassing both slow-varying emotional trends and rapid neural oscillations, providing a comprehensive view of emotional temporal evolution.
Hybrid Architecture Benefits
DGConformer synergistically integrates dynamic graph learning for spatial modeling with hybrid attention-convolution for temporal modeling. This integration allows for a more accurate and comprehensive representation of the brain's spatiotemporal dynamics during emotional processes. By adaptively constructing graphs and modeling diverse temporal patterns, the model overcomes limitations of static graph structures and captures both global and local temporal dependencies effectively, leading to superior emotion recognition performance.

Impact in Affective Computing
Challenge: Traditional EEG-based emotion recognition faces challenges due to the non-stationary, high-dimensional nature of EEG signals and complex dynamic interdependencies.
Solution: DGConformer's dynamic graph structure adaptively captures brain connectivity, while its Conformer module effectively models temporal dependencies, addressing both local and long-range patterns.
Results: The model achieved state-of-the-art accuracy, demonstrating its capability to learn distinctive spatiotemporal patterns and significantly improve emotion classification reliability. This provides a novel solution for EEG-based affective computing and cognitive neuroscience research.
