A Critical AI Media Literacy Perspective on the Future of Higher Education with Artificial Intelligence Through Communities of Practice on Reddit
As artificial intelligence (AI), Generative AI (GenAI), and Language Learning Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini continue to become increasingly embedded in everyday life, instructors across disciplines are raising urgent questions about the future of academia (Murphy et al., 2025; Nolan, 2025). As illustrated in Table 1, AI use in higher education extends beyond writing and efficiency-oriented tasks, functioning instead as a mediational tool that reshapes sensemaking, decision-making, accessibility, and academic labor across institutional roles. As companies begin to roll out free or discounted versions of their LLMs for educators and students (Anthropic, 2026; Morrone, 2026), their impact on educational contexts is only growing. This rapid adoption of GenAI technologies is accompanied by mixed reactions. With current studies claiming that using ChatGPT significantly reduces brain activity (Kosmyna et al., 2025), many are concerned about the long-term effects of reliance on AI for knowledge construction. However, many scholars argue that AI integration is not simply about adding new technologies but rather calls for a fundamental reimagining of educational systems. As Almufarreh and Arshad (2023) assert, AI has the potential to transform learning environments to be more personalized, efficient, and responsive provided it is used critically and intention-ally (Stewart & Rodgers, 2025). This perspective echoes Mijan et al. (2025), who highlight how AI, when situated within inclusive pedagogical design, can better reflect the diverse needs of today's learners. I therefore adopt a critical AI media literacy perspective (Stewart & Rodgers, 2025) to frame this study. From a critical AI media literacy perspective, AI uses must be understood as socially situated and value-laden rather than neutral or purely technical. Examining how AI is taken up in higher education foregrounds questions of power, agency, and access, emphasizing the need for intentional, critically informed engagement that centers human judgment and equity in academic contexts.
