This study utilized an AI-supported experience sampling method to investigate how time constraints influence individuals' ability to discern misinformation in real-time news evaluation. Participants evaluated true and AI-generated false news on their smartphones. Key findings indicate that time constraints reduce discernment of false news, suggesting that rapid news consumption environments increase vulnerability to misinformation. Factors like digital literacy and political satisfaction enhance discernment, while dogmatism and familiarity decrease it. The novel methodology offers a more ecologically valid approach to studying misinformation.

The study introduced a novel experience sampling methodology (ESM) leveraging AI (OpenAI 'gpt-4-0125-preview' model) for real-time news streaming and modification. Participants evaluated news headlines on smartphones for two weeks under various conditions, including time constraints. This approach enhances ecological validity by studying misinformation discernment in naturalistic settings, capturing real-time behavior and environmental context.

Time constraint significantly reduced the discernment of false news, making participants rate it as more accurate. This effect was not observed for true news. Higher digital literacy and political system satisfaction were associated with better false news discernment, while higher dogmatism and familiarity (illusory truth effect) increased perceived accuracy of false news. Engagement (clicking links) for false news was higher under time constraint even after debriefing, indicating that misinformation can drive interaction.

Limitations include potential systematic bias from accuracy prompts (sharing decision after accuracy rating), which might underestimate real-world effects. Immediate debriefing could also incidentally enhance discernment over time. The reliance on a student sample and mixed language (German/English) sub-samples limits generalizability, calling for more diverse and balanced future research.

Future research should refine the AI-guided real-time streaming methodology by transitioning to dynamic web-based experimental platforms for broader recruitment and adaptive survey designs. Longitudinal studies examining cumulative exposure effects are crucial. The findings emphasize the need for context-specific strategies to combat misinformation dissemination, targeting cognitive constraints, individual differences, and contextual elements.

Impact of Cognitive & Situational Factors on Misinformation Discernment

Factor Effect on False News Accuracy
Time Constraint Increased perceived accuracy (0.27, p < .001)
Digital Literacy Decreased perceived accuracy (-0.29, p < .001)
Political System Satisfaction Decreased perceived accuracy (-0.30, p < .001)
Dogmatism Increased perceived accuracy (0.12, p = .016)
Familiarity Increased perceived accuracy (0.51, p < .001)
Distraction No significant direct effect observed

Paradox of Engagement: Misinformation & Clicks

The study revealed a paradox: participants were less likely to share false news but showed increased interest in clicking through to original sources when presented with false news under time constraints, even after being informed it was false. This suggests that misinformation, despite recognized dubious nature, can still drive user interaction, posing a challenge for content recommendation algorithms that often prioritize engagement metrics.

Key Takeaway: Engagement metrics alone may inadvertently promote misinformation. Solutions must consider veracity beyond clicks.

Context: False news links clicked more often under time constraint (odds ratio = 1.96, p = .024).
