An Assessment of Anki Flashcards Use in Comparison to Alternative Study Methodologies in First Year Graduate Entry Medical Students
First year graduate entry to medicine (GEM) students require effective personalised study techniques in order to learn significant amounts of factual information. This study analysed learning methodologies utilised by a cohort of first year GEM students and their perception of their utility, particularly of the spaced-repetition learning app, Anki. Furthermore, our study compared assessment performance with study methodology utilised by this cohort of students.

Challenge: The variability in Anki usage, with only half reviewing more than 30 cards daily, indicates a challenge in consistent engagement.
Solution: Highlighting the long-term benefits and specific subject improvements (like physiology) can motivate consistent daily review habits.
Outcome: Extensive and consistent Anki usage correlates with better performance, particularly against less consistent engagement.
Perceived Utility of Anki
Students widely reported positive experiences with Anki, particularly appreciating its 'active recall' element for 'keeping material fresh' and 'keeping up with last semesters material'. Many felt it 'forced me to not only study everyday [sic], but to review lectures earlier than I ever would have if I didn't use the tool' and found it 'a very powerful tool'.
Challenges and Negative Perceptions
Some students found Anki 'stressful', 'anxiety'-inducing, and 'overwhelming' due to the requirement to keep up with the system and commit to a certain number of cards per day. Comments suggested it would be 'very helpful if I found it less stressful to keep up with the daily aspect'.
