Bridging the human-AI knowledge gap through concept discovery and transfer in AlphaZero

AI systems have achieved superhuman performance, but their internal knowledge is difficult for humans to access. This paper introduces a method to extract novel, teachable, and non-human chess concepts from AlphaZero's internal representations. Using convex optimization and filtering for teachability and novelty, new concepts are discovered and presented to top grandmasters as prototypes. A preliminary study showed significant improvement in grandmasters' ability to solve concept-based puzzles after learning, demonstrating that machine-guided discovery and teaching is possible at the highest human level. This work opens avenues for leveraging AI's superhuman knowledge to advance human understanding across various domains.

This specific concept was found to be highly teachable to grandmasters, who described it as 'clever' and 'not natural' yet effective.
