Escape from mathematical-skill deficiencies: gamified interactive platforms to reinforce quantitative skills

This study analyzes the design and implementation of Escape Room platforms as an educational reinforcement strategy to address quantitative deficiencies among students entering university programs in Economics and Business. These deficiencies, rooted in shortcomings of the pre-university curriculum, hinder students' ability to develop essential academic competencies, thereby limiting their performance in these disciplines. To mitigate this issue, the entire Spanish mathematical Secondary Education curriculum leading to these degrees was analyzed, and four interactive Escape Rooms were developed using Genially. These platforms focus on basic Mathematical Operations, Matrix Algebra, Functions, and Derivatives. They are designed to support autonomous, flexible, and adaptive learning, addressing individual student needs while remaining accessible to educators through Genially's user-friendly interface. This accessibility minimizes adoption barriers for instructors, such as the cost of expensive licenses and the need for programming skills.

4.05 points Average Improvement on Mathematical Operations

The 85 students who completed Platform I (Mathematical Operations) improved their overall QS level by an average of 4.05 points (out of 10), with a very large effect size (d = 1.32, 95%CI [1.03, 1.61]). This effect size demonstrates the platform's effectiveness in reinforcing basic arithmetic content.

2.94 points Average Improvement on Matrix Algebra

Platform II, focused on Matrix Algebra, was completed by 84 students. These students showed a significant improvement of 2.94 points (out of 10) in this quantitative area, corresponding to a large effect size (d=0.80, 95%CI [0.55, 1.04]). Items Q8 and Q10 showed particularly notable gains, with accuracy rates doubling compared to the Pretest.

Knowledge related to Mathematical Functions (Platform III) also showed a significant improvement among the 106 students who completed it, with an average gain of 2.95 points (out of 10) and large effect sizes (d=1.07, 95%CI [0.83, 1.31]). However, while three of the questions showed improvements of around 50% in response accuracy after the intervention, the remaining items exhibited more modest gains.

4.13 points Average Improvement on Derivatives

Finally, Platform IV, focused on Derivatives, yielded the largest improvement, with an average increase of 4.13 points and a large effect size (d = 0.91, 95%CI [0.67, 1.13]). Both questions showed clear progress, indicating the platform's high effectiveness in reinforcing differential calculus concepts.

0.55 points Improvement per Additional Platform

The dose-response analysis revealed a significant linear relationship between the level of engagement with the platforms and students' final academic performance. The multiple linear regression model showed that completing an additional platform was associated with an increase of approximately 0.55 points in the QS Posttest, holding other variables constant. A plateau effect emerged beyond three platforms, suggesting an optimal cost-benefit threshold around three platforms.
