Exploring Nurses' Perspectives on the Use of Artificial Intelligence Chatbots for Mental Health Support: A Cross-Sectional Study in Greece
Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed healthcare delivery by revolutionizing the offering opportunities in prognosis, diagnosis, personalized treatment, and improving patient outcomes. However, little is known about the nurses' attitudes toward the integration of AI-driven conversational technology and AI chatbots into clinical practice. The aim of our study was to investigate nurses' attitudes regarding the use of AI chatbots as a tool for mental health support. Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate their levels of acceptance and fear toward AI, while examining the influence of demographic variables on these attitudes.
Executive Impact & Key Metrics
Nurses generally held moderately positive attitudes toward both AI-based mental health chatbots and AI more broadly. Several demographic factors were found to significantly influence these attitudes. Higher levels of digital technology competence were significantly associated with greater acceptance of artificial intelligence. Male nurses reported significantly higher acceptance of AI compared to their female counterparts. Lower financial status was significantly associated with heightened fear of AI.

The study assessed nurses' attitudes, acceptance, and fear of AI, highlighting critical areas for AI integration in mental healthcare. It also explored the influence of demographic and digital competence factors.
Key findings include moderate positive attitudes towards personal benefits of AI chatbots, but low perception of technical advantages. A moderate level of AI acceptance and fear was observed. Male nurses showed higher acceptance and perceived personal benefits.
Digital competence strongly correlates with AI acceptance. Gender differences in AI attitudes are notable, with males generally more accepting and fearful. The research underscores the need for ethical AI deployment, data privacy, and trust-building initiatives.
Enhancing AI literacy and targeted training are crucial for navigating digitized healthcare. Policymakers must establish guidelines for AI integration in healthcare, focusing on patient safety, autonomy, and sustainable integration into clinical care.
Enterprise Process Flow: Study Design
| Aspect | Observation | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Technical Advantages (AI Chatbots) | Low positive attitudes (Mean 1.76/5) | Indicates skepticism or lack of awareness regarding AI's technical capabilities in mental health. |
| Personal Advantages (AI Chatbots) | Moderate positive attitudes (Mean 3.26/5) | Nurses perceive personal benefits, possibly related to career growth or individual efficiency gains. |
| Overall AI Acceptance | Moderate level of acceptance (Mean 5.15/10) | Opportunity for targeted education to increase comfort and adoption. |
| Overall AI Fear | Moderate level of fear (Mean 5.72/10) | Highlights the need to address concerns about job displacement, ethics, and safety. |
| Digital Competence | Higher competence linked to greater AI acceptance | Investing in digital literacy training can directly boost AI adoption. |
| Gender Differences | Male nurses show significantly higher AI acceptance and perceived personal benefits | Suggests need for gender-sensitive AI training and communication strategies. |
Bridging the Mental Healthcare Gap with AI: A Conceptual Case Study
A large healthcare system faced significant challenges in mental healthcare accessibility, exacerbated by workforce shortages and stigma. Implementing an AI-driven chatbot for initial patient screening, basic support, and resource navigation, they aimed to augment their nursing staff. The AI chatbot helped manage routine inquiries, freeing up nurses for complex cases, and provided immediate, accessible support for patients reluctant to seek traditional care. Initial nurse skepticism about technical advantages (similar to the study findings) was overcome through comprehensive training and demonstrating how AI complemented, rather than replaced, their expertise. This led to increased patient engagement and optimized resource allocation.
