A recent meta-analysis showed human-AI combinations often underperform the best individual agent. This paper argues that this is due to insufficient attention to human learning in experimental designs. Re-analysis of 74 studies revealed that designs fostering learning (e.g., outcome feedback) were rare. Crucially, studies providing outcome feedback, especially when paired with AI explanations, showed positive human-AI synergy, while explanations without feedback were strongly linked to negative synergy. This suggests that current literature underestimates human-AI collaboration potential due to designs that hinder human learning and adaptive collaboration strategies.

Human-AI synergy occurs when the combined performance of humans and AI surpasses either acting alone. The meta-analysis by Vaccaro et al. [1] initially showed an average negative synergy, meaning human-AI combinations performed worse than the better individual agent. Our re-analysis suggests this view is pessimistic due to experimental designs that don't facilitate human learning.

The Role of Feedback

Outcome feedback, where participants are told the correct response, is crucial for human learning and adapting strategies [6, 5, 7, 8]. The original meta-analysis found most studies (64 out of 74) lacked this feature. Our re-analysis shows that studies providing feedback tend to report higher human-AI synergy. This implies that humans need opportunities to learn and refine their understanding of the task and the AI's reliability.

AI Explanations & Learning

AI explanations can help humans understand how a model arrived at its output, guiding their attention to relevant features [10]. However, our re-analysis revealed a crucial interaction: AI explanations only led to positive synergy when paired with outcome feedback. Without feedback, AI explanations were strongly linked to negative synergy. This suggests that explanations are useful for synergy only when humans can learn to verify the AI's reliability.
