The GenAI Paradox: A Threat to Knowledge Ecosystems
The rapid adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) systems, while offering instant answers, has paradoxically led to a significant decline in user participation in vital online Q&A forums such as Stack Overflow. This trend creates a "Tragedy of the Commons" scenario: LLMs depend heavily on the high-quality, human-generated data from these platforms for their training and continuous improvement, yet their popularity erodes the very sources they rely upon. Without intervention, this negative feedback loop risks the long-term viability of both human knowledge communities and future AI development.
To address this, we propose a novel framework for sequential interaction: GenAI systems proactively suggest questions that they struggle with or find valuable for learning to Q&A forums. The forums then, based on their own criteria, select and publish a subset of these questions. This mechanism transforms a competitive dynamic into a collaborative one, aiming to secure a sustainable future for both parties.

This near-zero, slightly negative correlation empirically confirms the fundamental misalignment between what LLMs find valuable for learning (e.g., questions they are uncertain about, measured by perplexity) and what human Q&A forums find engaging (e.g., highly viewed questions). This divergence underscores why a purely competitive approach is unsustainable.

Driving Mutual Growth: Experimental Validation
We conducted extensive data-driven simulations using real Stack Exchange data and multiple open-source LLMs (Pythia 6.9B, LLaMA 3.1 8B, LLaMA 3.1 8B-Instruct) to evaluate our framework. GenAI's utility was approximated by perplexity (a measure of model uncertainty, indicating learning potential), while the forum's utility was proxied by normalized view counts (human engagement).
Our experiments explored different GenAI submission strategies under asymmetric information: G-Greedy (naively submitting questions with the highest perplexity), Random selection, and our proposed G-Utility Maximization. G-Utility is an acceptance-aware strategy that estimates the probability of a question being accepted by the forum.
The G-Utility Advantage: Optimizing for Shared Success
Our findings reveal that the G-Utility strategy consistently and significantly outperforms both G-Greedy and Random selection across all evaluated LLMs. By incorporating an estimate of the forum's acceptance probability, GenAI can make more informed proposals that are more likely to be published, thus maximizing its own learning potential and the forum's engagement.
Quantifiable Recovery Rates
Under realistic asymmetric information settings, the G-Utility strategy achieved substantial utility recovery compared to an idealized, full-information collaborative scenario:
- It recovered 46-52% of GenAI's optimal learning potential.
- It recovered 55-66% of the forum's optimal engagement potential.
These Estimated Utility Recovery Rates (EURR), which are conservative under-estimates, demonstrate that even with limited transparency, a strategically designed, acceptance-aware collaboration can yield significant mutual benefits. This approach offers a viable and sustainable path forward, ensuring that GenAI models continue to improve through high-quality human data, while online forums regain vitality by attracting challenging, high-value questions that LLMs currently struggle to answer effectively.
