Generative AI as a Student Research Assistant: The Relationship of Academic and Research Practices in Higher Education

This study analyzes Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) use by students in higher education across seven countries (2083 students, 3686 responses). It introduces two indicators: A1 for overall academic use (79.06%) and A2 for research-oriented use (46.66%). The findings show GenAI is widely adopted for academic tasks but its research application is less common and varies significantly by country. Countries like Kazakhstan and a Ukrainian subsample show higher research-oriented GenAI use, positioning GenAI as an emerging, though fragmented, student research assistant within the academic subsystem.

Key Impact Metrics

Based on a survey of 2083 students across seven countries, these metrics highlight the current state of Generative AI adoption in higher education academic and research practices.

0 Overall Academic Use (A1)
0 Research-Oriented Use (A2)

Widespread Academic Adoption vs. Fragmented Research Use

0 of students use Generative AI for academic tasks (A1).
0 Only this percentage use it for research tasks (A2).

Sociotechnical Systems Theory (STS) Framework

Aspect Traditional Tech View STS Applied to GenAI in HE
Technology Role Automation tool, independent agent. Cognitive assistant, part of a human-AI co-learning system.
Efficiency Driver Perfection of technology. Consistency with human structures, norms, competencies.
GenAI in Research Fixed functional role. Analytic metaphor for observed use in supporting research stages, varying in intensity/sustainability.
Integration Outcome Technological development. Joint optimization of social and technological subsystems.

Interpreting GenAI Use Configurations (A1-A2 Zoned Space)

Enterprise Process Flow

Define A1 (Academic Use) & A2 (Research Use)
Plot A1 vs A2 on a Zoned Graph
Identify Zone 2: Limited Use (Low A1, Low A2)
Identify Zone 3: Routine Academic Activity (High A1, Low A2)
Identify Zone 4: High Research Activity (High A1, High A2)
Analyze Sociotechnical Configuration

GenAI Use Across Countries and Student Levels

The study reveals significant cross-country heterogeneity in GenAI adoption. Kazakhstan (A1: 95.6%, A2: 73.2%) and Ukraine-1 (A1: 82.99%, A2: 60.6%) demonstrate the highest research-oriented use, placing them in 'Zone 4' (High Research Activity). In contrast, countries like Poland-1, Poland-3, and Uzbekistan exhibit a wider gap between A1 and A2, indicating a dominance of routine educational use ('Zone 3'). While A1 (academic use) shows statistically significant differences across undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels, A2 (research use) remains relatively homogeneous, suggesting general factors drive research-oriented adoption rather than study level.
