Investigating the Utility of Scene-Combined Music Beat Click Games in Stress and Anxiety Reduction
Against the backdrop of rising anxiety disorder prevalence in China, exacerbated by pandemic-related stressors, we developed a project providing a novel intervention integrating music and game therapy. This project features a rhythm-synchronized game with audiovisual immersion, enabling users to explore a virtual 3D environment. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the efficacy of this intervention in reducing stress and anxiety. Utilizing questionnaire assessments and quantitative data analysis, our results demonstrated that participants achieved a significant emotional transition from anxiety to calmness and relaxation through precise rhythm-based interactions synchronized with music. These findings underscore the therapeutic potential of music games for anxiety management.

The Problem: Rising Anxiety and The Novel Solution
In China, intense academic competition and societal pressures have led to a significant increase in mental disorders, particularly anxiety, affecting millions. Traditional treatments often fall short, highlighting a crucial need for innovative therapeutic interventions. This research introduces a novel approach: a scene-combined music beat click game.
This intervention integrates music and game therapy through a rhythm-synchronized game within an immersive virtual 3D environment. The goal is to facilitate an emotional shift from anxiety to calmness and relaxation through precise, rhythm-based interactions.
Study Design: Participants, Tools, and the Game Itself
Participants: Potential participants were screened using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7). Those scoring 10 or above were included, resulting in 14 participants randomly assigned to experimental (n=7) or control (n=7) groups.
Study Design: Anxiety levels were assessed using the Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS) both before and after the intervention. The experimental group engaged in the music game for approximately five minutes, while the control group remained seated for the same duration without intervention.
The Music Game: Developed on Unity3D 2022.3.48, the interactive game followed a "Dancing Line" model. Players tapped the screen in sync with musical beats to steer a character through 3D space, hitting rhythmic checkpoints. The game featured cosmic visuals (galaxies, planets) with soothing music, creating a multi-dimensional linkage between music, action, and visuals, generating strong rhythmic feedback and a sense of immersion. This multisensory approach aims to enhance perceived control and reduce anxiety.
Key Findings: Significant Anxiety Reduction Observed
Baseline Matching: Independent samples t-tests confirmed no significant difference in baseline anxiety levels between groups (t(12)=0.302, p=0.768), ensuring comparability.
Post-Intervention Differences: A highly significant between-group difference emerged after the intervention (t(6.873)=8.095, p<0.001). The experimental group showed a substantial reduction in anxiety levels (M=2.14, SD=0.143) compared to their pre-test scores (M=6.43, SD=0.369). In contrast, the control group maintained nearly identical scores (M=6.57, SD=0.528).
Within-Group Changes: Paired-samples t-tests confirmed no significant change in the control group (M=0.000, p=1.000). However, the experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in anxiety (M=4.286, SD=0.756, t(6)=15.000, p<0.001), representing approximately a 66.7% reduction in subjective anxiety.
Therapeutic Potential, Limitations, and Future Directions
Therapeutic Potential: The study confirms the therapeutic potential of interactive music games as a novel anxiety intervention. The multisensory "hearing-vision-movement" interaction system, combined with rhythmic precision and virtual environments, effectively enhances emotion regulation and user motivation. This interactive approach proves superior to passive listening and offers a new pathway for anxiety management.
Limitations: The small sample size (N=14) may limit generalizability and statistical validity. The reliance solely on self-reported SUDS scores, without objective physiological indicators (e.g., cortisol, heart rate variability, EEG), might be influenced by social desirability bias. Future research should integrate multimodal physiological and neural data.
Future Directions: Expand sample size, include clinical populations, and consider moderators like gender/age. Integrate multimodal physiological measurements and extend observation periods for long-term effects. Utilizing AI for dynamic rhythm analysis and generation can personalize interventions, promoting continuous optimization and integration into mobile health platforms.

Case Study: Pilot Study - Proving Therapeutic Potential
Challenge: Addressing the escalating prevalence of anxiety disorders in China, compounded by recent global stressors, demanded an innovative and accessible intervention beyond conventional pharmaceutical treatments.
Solution: Our team developed a novel scene-combined music beat click game. This interactive digital therapeutic tool immersed participants in a virtual 3D environment, where precise, rhythm-based interactions with soothing music and dynamic visuals aimed to reduce stress and anxiety.
Results: A pilot study involving 14 participants demonstrated significant success. The experimental group experienced a 66.7% reduction in anxiety levels (from an average SUDS score of 6.43 pre-test to 2.14 post-test). Participants reported a clear emotional transition from anxiety to calmness and relaxation, directly attributable to the rhythm-based interactions and audiovisual immersion.
Impact: This project successfully validated the therapeutic potential of interactive music games. It provides empirical evidence for a new, engaging, and scalable approach to anxiety management, opening avenues for future integration into mental health platforms and wider enterprise wellness programs.
