Recursive Decomposition of Logical Thoughts: Framework for Superior Reasoning and Knowledge Propagation in Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) often face significant challenges in multi-step reasoning, leading to cascading errors, rigid prompt structures, and underutilization of intermediate thought processes. This analysis introduces Recursive Decomposition of Logical Thoughts (RDoLT), a novel framework designed to enhance LLM reasoning by mimicking human cognitive processes through hierarchical decomposition, multi-feature scoring, and dynamic knowledge propagation. RDoLT aims to overcome current limitations by enabling structured, memory-aware exploration of complex thought spaces, ultimately delivering more reliable and adaptive AI reasoning solutions for enterprise applications.

Executive Impact: Revolutionizing LLM Reasoning

RDoLT offers a robust, scalable paradigm grounded in cognitive principles, delivering superior accuracy and stability across diverse reasoning tasks compared to state-of-the-art prompting strategies. This translates into more reliable, efficient, and adaptable AI systems for critical enterprise functions.

Hierarchical Problem Breakdown

The initial phase involves decomposing the reasoning task into three distinct levels based on gradual and progressive complexity: easy, intermediate, and final. This hierarchical decomposition is more sophisticated than Least-to-Most [72] by incorporating a more granular and human-like intelligent method of task segmentation. Given a complex reasoning task R, we decompose it into three sub-tasks, R = {Reasy, Rintermediate, Rfinal}. Each sub-task is designed to incrementally build upon the previous one, ensuring that the model tackles simpler components first and progressively moves to more complex reasoning. The decomposition process is recursive, with the output of each level informing the subsequent level (Equation 4). This approach significantly reduces cognitive overload on the model and mirrors human problem-solving.

Multi-Feature Thought Evaluation

The RDoLT framework evaluates each generated thought at every decomposition level across four core criteria: Logical Validity, Coherence, Simplicity, and Adaptiveness. The LLM acts as an autonomous evaluator ('LLM-as-a-judge' [70]), assigning a score on a 1-10 scale for each feature based on a detailed rubric. Logical Validity assesses adherence to logical principles, Coherence measures contextual and semantic flow, Simplicity rewards clarity and conciseness, and Adaptiveness ensures alignment with task instructions. The total score (sum of features) determines propagation to the next stage, with a predefined threshold τ (Equation 9). This systematic, feature-based evaluation ensures robust and self-correcting reasoning.

Intelligent Knowledge Retention & Reuse

The Knowledge Propagation Module (KPM) is crucial for managing and propagating knowledge across reasoning steps. It tracks both selected (meeting threshold) and non-selected ('weak') thoughts, making them available to all subsequent stages (Equation 10). Unlike traditional methods that discard non-majority paths, KPM continuously refines understanding by considering the full spectrum of generated thoughts, ensuring valuable ideas are not lost. It also handles edge cases, such as when no thoughts pass the threshold, by initiating feedback loops for regeneration (Equation 11), preventing reasoning bottlenecks and ensuring optimal thought progression.

Case Study: Haley's Recycling Problem with RDoLT

RDoLT systematically addresses complex problems through a multi-tier approach, exemplified by 'Haley's Recycling Problem' (Figure 3). Initially, the task is decomposed into 'Easy' (identifying point-earning logic), 'Intermediate' (calculating total recycling), and 'Final' (computing total points). For each tier, multiple candidate thoughts are generated and rigorously scored based on Logical Validity, Coherence, Simplicity, and Adaptiveness. Thoughts failing to meet a predefined threshold are rejected (e.g., 'Thought 1' in the Easy stage for lacking focus). The Knowledge Propagation Module (KPM) plays a critical role by tracking both selected and rejected thoughts across all stages. This allows previously rejected but potentially valuable insights to be revisited and prevents redundant or low-quality reasoning from propagating. For instance, in the 'Easy' stage, 'Thought 3' (focused on finding total recycling and dividing by 3) is selected. This selected thought then guides the 'Intermediate' stage, where 'Thought 2' correctly calculates the total recycling. Finally, in the 'Final' stage, 'Thought 2' accurately derives the total points (27/3 = 9). KPM ensures that the system maintains a comprehensive understanding of the reasoning progression, refining its approach based on continuous feedback and ultimately converging on the correct solution: Haley and her friend earned a total of 9 points.
